LOVE IN RAMADHAN. By :Papatia Feauxzar
Love in Ramadhan is a beautiful thing as it brings spouses closer to each other after a hard day of fasting. That said, with long hours of fasting in certain places of the world, it’s a thing that most couples don’t have time for out of exhaustion or completely ban under the pretense that it’s haram. Yes, intercourse is haram during Ramadhan but during specific times. Throughout Ramadhan, it’s allowed to have sexual intercourse but many Muslims will bluntly tell you that it’s forbidden while other will just simply refrain from having any act of play because it tampers with their focus. It’s simple as that. But making love in a halal relationship is commendable and also an act of worship. Therefore making time for our spouses during this holy month is a must.
With regards to the last ten days of Ramadhan, the Prophet (sallalahu aleihi wassalam) has been seen to have figuratively buckled up his belt and spent this special time away from his wives and deep in spirituality at the mosque. (Source: Muslim, 1174-1175)
So unless your niyyat is I’tikaff, there is no need to abstain from Love in Ramadhan after iftar and before suhur as we all know that during the actual fast, it’s forbidden to do so. (I’m just making sure we’re all on the same page here. *Laughs*) Besides I’tikaff can be one day. It can also be three days. It’s ten days at most!
“It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives [for sexual relations]. They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them. Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and forgave you. So now, have relations with them and seek that which Allah has decreed for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the sunset. And do not have relations with them as long as you are staying for worship in the mosques. These are the limits [set by] Allah , so do not approach them. Thus does Allah make clear His ordinances to the people that they may become righteous.” (Quran 2:187)
To continue, if you’re fasting and you unintentionally eat or drink something, it’s an easy fix. You can resume your fast as soon as you remember and repent because you forgot. Now, let’s say that you’re fasting and you forgot and had sex with your wife. I don’t know how it can happen but it has and this tells us that our nafs can be overpowering because we all know shaytan is locked away during this holy month. So to fix this grave mistake you can:
- Free a slave (This will be hard to do depending on where you live)
- Feed 60 poor people as charity (Easy to do in my opinion)
- Or finally fast for two consecutive months after Ramadhan ends (Extremely hard to do but not impossible ).
If you don’t want to have to fix it, stay focus and don’t derail. May Allah protect us and never remove us from the right path insha’Allah, amiin. Please keep the ummah in your prayers especially in these last few days leading to the Eid insha’Allah. Jazak’Allah khair! In conclusion, whether you have Love in Ramadhan or afterwards, it’s your choice. Just remember these supplications before the act: “Bismillah, Allahumma jannibna-sh-shaitan, wa jannibi-sh-shaitan ma razaqtana (In the name of Allah, O Allah, keeps us away from the devil, and keep the devil away from what you may grant us).” Muslim
